BST Program summaries

BST is excited to continue with our enhanced program structure for the 2025-26 season. Rather than organizing athletes strictly by age group, we will remain focused on a race series-based model. Athletes will be placed on teams according to the race series they plan to attend. Please see the descriptions below for further details.

2025-26 Season Programs

The Brighton Ski Team is offering four program options for the 2025-26 season: Devo Team, YSL Team, Bridge Team, and South Series Team.

Please carefully review the membership options to ensure your athlete is registered appropriately:

  • Devo athletes (non-racers) should register for the “Alpine General Non-Competitor” membership.

  • YSL, Bridge, and South Series athletes must have the age-appropriate “Alpine Competitor” membership.

For details on membership categories, visit the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Alpine Memberships page.

How Do I Know Which Team Is Right for My Athlete?

Start by reading the detailed program descriptions below, but here are some general guidelines to help you decide:

  • Age 5: Athletes must join the Devo Team.

  • Ages 6-7: If your athlete has no prior race experience and you do not plan to attend races this season, choose the Devo Team.

  • Ages 6-11: If your athlete has little or no race experience and you want them to compete this season, the YSL Team is the best fit.

  • Ages 8-11: If your athlete has prior race experience and you’re looking for more competitive opportunities, including both YSL and South Series Races, consider the Bridge Team.

  • Ages 9+: If your athlete has previously medaled at a South Series race, they should be placed on the South Series Team.

  • Ages 12 and older: Athletes in this age group must join the South Series Team.

Devo Team (Non-Competitive): Ages 5-7

The Devo Team is Brighton Ski Team’s introductory program for young skiers with no prior racing experience. Please note: this is not a learn-to-ski program. Athletes must already have independent skiing ability, including the confidence to ski the full mountain unassisted on green and blue terrain. They should also be progressing from wedge (“pizza”) turns to parallel (“french fry”) turns.

Because some of our youngest athletes may still need help loading or unloading the chairlift, we maintain a low coach-to-athlete ratio of 1:3 to ensure safety and individual attention.

Training Schedule:
Training is once a week on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., from early December through mid-March at Brighton Resort.

Program Focus:
This program emphasizes skiing fundamentals and skill development through directed free skiing. Athletes will work on balance, stance, and technical form while being introduced to basic race concepts, ski safety, and mountain etiquette. Training includes all-mountain skiing and an introduction to gate training.

Competition:
Devo athletes will not participate in Intermountain Division races. However, if conditions allow, they may forerun at our home race. They are also invited to join ski school races (in February and March) and the Family Fun Ski Day race at the end of the season.

The Devo Team is ideal for strong, independent 5-7 year old skiers who are ready for more structure and support than ski school offers - and who are excited to build the skills they’ll need for racing in future seasons.

Youth Ski League (YSL) Team: Ages 6-11

The YSL Team is designed for athletes ages 6-11 in the U8-U12 competition age groups who are ready to enter the world of ski racing. These athletes will compete exclusively in the Youth Ski League (YSL) race series, which provides a fun, age-appropriate introduction to competitive skiing.

Requirements:
Athletes must be able to ski all on-piste terrain at Brighton Resort unassisted, load and unload chairlifts independently, and should be able to make parallel (“french fry”) turns most of the time.

Training Schedule:

  • All YSL athletes train on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Brighton Resort.

  • Athletes who opt for the two-day program will also train on Tuesday evenings from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Brighton Resort.

Program Focus:
The YSL Team emphasizes both skiing and racing fundamentals. Athletes will continue developing their technical skills, including balance, stance, edging, and pressure control. Coaches will utilize U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s SkillsQuest program to provide structured development, skill benchmarks, and ongoing motivation for progression.

This team is ideal for young skiers who are ready to take the next step in their racing journey through a fun, supportive, and skills-focused environment.

Bridge Team: Ages 8-11

The Bridge Team is designed for experienced U10-U12 athletes who are ready to compete in both the Youth Ski League (YSL) and South Series race series. This program serves as a stepping stone between the foundational YSL level and the more competitive South Series.

Requirements:
This team is intended for athletes with prior race experience. Athletes must be able to ski all on-piste terrain at Brighton Resort unassisted and should consistently make parallel (“french fry”) turns on groomed terrain.

Training Schedule:

  • Saturdays: Full-day training from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Brighton Resort.

  • Tuesdays and/or Thursdays: Evening training from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Utah Olympic Park.

Program Focus:
The Bridge Team combines elements of both YSL and South Series programs, providing a balanced progression in skill development and race experience. Athletes will receive increased training volume and compete in a broader range of events throughout the season, helping them gain confidence, adaptability, and deeper tactical understanding on the race course.

This program is ideal for motivated young skiers who are ready to expand their racing experience while continuing to refine their technical fundamentals in a supportive, developmentally appropriate environment.

South Series Team: Ages 9-15

The South Series Team is our most advanced program, designed for experienced athletes who will race exclusively in the South Series - a more competitive circuit featuring longer, more technical courses. This team is best suited for dedicated skiers looking to elevate their racing through increased training volume and higher-level competition.

Requirements:
This program is open to athletes with 2 or more years of race experience. Athletes must be able to ski all lift-accessed, on- and off-piste terrain at Brighton Resort unassisted and should consistently demonstrate strong parallel (“french fry”) turns across all terrain, groomed or ungroomed.

Note: U10 athletes may only join the South Series Team by invitation from the Program Director.

Training Schedule:
South Series athletes train two or three days per week:

  • Saturdays: Full-day training from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Brighton Resort.

  • Tuesdays and/or Thursdays: Evening training from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Utah Olympic Park.

Program Focus:
With the most intensive training schedule of all BST programs, the South Series Team prepares athletes for the demands of technical race courses and two-day competition events. The program emphasizes tactical skill development, athletic conditioning, and performance under pressure.

Athletes will compete in six South Series races throughout the season, each serving as a qualifier for the Intermountain Division (IMD) Championships for the U10 and U12 age groups. Those who do not qualify may instead participate in the IMD Finals, ensuring continued race experience and development.

This team is ideal for committed skiers ages 9-15 who are ready to train and compete at a high level in pursuit of their racing goals.

team selection faq

  • After confirming with your athlete’s coach that this is a developmentally appropriate choice for your athlete, we can upgrade your registration to YSL Team later in the season at a prorated fee.

  • After confirming with your athlete’s coach that this is a developmentally appropriate choice for your athlete, we can upgrade your registration to Bridge Team later in the season at a prorated fee.

  • If your athlete is 6-7 years old, we may recommend that we move them down to the Devo Team, in which case we would offer a partial prorated refund accounting for the difference in cost between the Devo Team and the team you initially selected. If your athlete is 8+ years old and BST coaching staff determines that the race training & competition environment is not developmentally appropriate for them, we may recommend that they pursue one of the Brighton Ski School programs for a season instead of remaining on the race team. In that instance, we would issue a prorated refund on the remainder of the season. Please be advised that this decision would most likely be made at the end of December once coaches have had the opportunity to observe and assess the athlete over the course of at least a few training sessions.

  • We get it — sometimes things don’t happen according to plan. If you need to discontinue participation in BST events and less than half of the season has passed, we are able to issue a partial refund on your registration fees. After half of the season has passed, we are not able to issue refunds.

Please ensure that you understand the information above before proceeding to our registration process.
